Snake Goddess
an ancient Minoan goddess
Nobody knows anything concrete about the Snake Goddess of ancient Minos.
There are sculptures of her in museums, but no writings have survived to tell
us her name, what she stands for or what she does. Nevertheless, her image is
extremely powerful; she is one of the most recognizable of all ancient
goddesses.
The Snake Goddess holds a snake in each hand; in some versions she also
has snakes entwined around her arms and a cat sitting upon her head. Her
bell-like skirt is tiered like a tiled roof; her waist is tiny and her
breasts are bare. Her eyes are open wide, her demeanor is fierce, she looks
strong and very brave. She obviously has an identification and/or a deep
rapport with animals. I feel that she is the guardian of rituals and secrets
of a long-forgotten religion, the holder of its wisdom and power.
