Artist Statement: Anne Shulenberger
I believe that being creative is what connects each of us with the highest power in the universe (call it what you will). When immersed in creating artwork I often feel a deep connection with all sentient beings and a strong conviction that what I am making is of utmost importance. This feeling of being part of something much bigger than my own individual self is what I am always striving for. It gives my creative struggle and my work meaning and makes my life worth living. I hope to communicate this powerful feeling of connection to all who come into contact with what I have created.
As a sculptor & painter I deal primarily with representational and/or symbolic images. I love to sculpt, draw and paint the human body (often dancing); I also love to depict horses (usually running). My mixed media works often combine acrylic paints with a variety of collage materials.
For several years I have been working on a series of relief sculptures of Goddesses & Holy Women from a wide variety cultures and historical periods. I also wrote and designed a book which includes poems and essays about Goddesses & Holy Women as well as photos of the sculptures.
In addition, I have created several small wall sculptures of Buddhas.
